meiji-macadamia-chocolate
Meiji Macadamia Chocolate — Slow-Roasted Nut, 64g

Macadamia roasted slowly in hot oil until the heat reaches the middle of the nut, then broken up and set into a milk chocolate Meiji mixes specially for it. Where the almond box snaps, this one gives: the nut is soft and crumbles rather than cracks, under a mellower, sweeter coating mixed for it. Nine to a paper box.

On the pack: マカダミアチョコレート (makadamia chokoreeto), macadamia chocolate.

What you're getting

The nut is crushed, not whole. If you are picturing one intact kernel in each piece, it is not that. Meiji uses broken macadamia, closer to two halves. If you know Lotte's version, which does use a whole nut, you will spot the difference immediately, and some people prefer theirs for exactly that reason.

Soft where almond is crisp. The slow oil roast leaves the nut yielding rather than hard: a crumble instead of a snap. That texture is the entire reason to choose this box over the almond one. Meiji once put the two head to head in a national vote of its own and they finished within about one per cent of each other, a maker's own poll rather than an independent survey, but it tells you the choice is genuinely even.

Chocolate leads, nut follows. Worth saying plainly, because the picture suggests otherwise: there is more chocolate than nut in these, and next to Meiji's own almond box the macadamia plays the supporting part. If you want the nut in front, buy the almond.

It melts, and it is the softer of the two. There is no finger-proof coating here of the kind the almond box has. Keep it somewhere cool, and in warm weather the fridge until just before eating is worth doing, which is what some Japanese buyers describe.

Allergens: contains milk, soy and macadamia. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.

Two more things worth knowing. There are nine pieces in the box: it launched at twelve, went to ten, and has been nine for years now, which long-time buyers in Japan have not let go of. And like the rest of Meiji's nut range, vegetable fat stands in for part of the cocoa butter.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0824/1312/5858/files/meiji-macadamia-chocolate-pack_5fa281be-7385-4c03-a326-ed81a450aa86.webp?v=1788124705
