nissin-cup-noodle-tom-yum-kung
Nissin Cup Noodle Tom Yum Kung BIG — Japanese Ramen Cup, 100g

A sour-hot prawn soup with noodles in it, made creamy with coconut milk rather than left thin and sharp: lemongrass and lime leaf over a tom yum paste that is genuinely made in Thailand. Kung means prawn, and there are whole ones in the cup. This is Nissin's own recreation of the dish, not a Thai product.

カップヌードル パクチー香るトムヤムクン ビッグ, pakuchii kaoru tomu yamu kun: pakuchii is coriander, and it sits in the product's own name.

What you're getting

You set the heat yourself. The tom yum paste comes as its own sachet, stirred in at the end, all of it, half of it, or none.

Sour first, hot second. The acidity is the assertive part, pitched above the instant tom yum sold in Thailand itself, and the chilli sits behind it.

Creamy, not thin. Coconut milk and a dairy component round the soup out. This is the richer style of tom yum, not the clear one.

Whole prawns, red chilli, mushroom and coriander loose in the cup, on a slightly wider noodle than the standard Cup Noodle uses.

About the coriander: it is in the product's Japanese name, so it looks like the headline, but it is the smallest of the four toppings, and milder than the name promises. It cannot be left out, though, so if coriander is a hard no for you, this is not your cup.

The honest caveat: people who bounce off this cup bounce off the sourness, not the herb. If sharp, sour soup is not what you want, buy a different one.

Allergens: contains prawn (crustacean), wheat, milk, sesame and soy. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.

The milk is real, not a coconut substitute: a dairy-based ingredient is named in the soup, so this is not dairy-free. Chicken is declared too, though it appears nowhere by name in the ingredient list. This is the Japanese domestic cup: Coles sells a Nissin tom yam cup as well, but that one is a smaller, China-made seafood version rather than this. Eat it slowly: the sour chilli steam coming off it catches in the throat if you rush. The lid is aluminium, so never microwave it in its own cup; Nissin warns of fire risk.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0824/1312/5858/files/nissin-cup-noodle-tom-yum-kung-big-cup.webp?v=1788097370
