About

An instant caramel latte powder in seven single-cup sticks that foams on top when you pour on freshly boiled water, and it tastes sweet and milky with only a light coffee taste. Buy it if you like a sweet, café-style caramel latte; if you want a strong coffee or an unsweetened one, this is the wrong drink.

On the pack: カフェラトリー 濃厚キャラメルマキアート (ka-feh-ra-toh-ree noh-koh caramel macchiato, "Café Latory rich caramel macchiato"). Café Latory is the foaming café-drink range of Blendy, a Japanese instant coffee brand.

What you're getting

  • The powder crackles as the water goes in and leaves a layer of foam on top.
  • It is sweetened with sugar and two sweeteners, aspartame and acesulfame K.
  • The caramel comes from a caramel powder made with condensed milk, milk powders and cream cheese, mixed through a milky latte.
  • One stick makes a small cup, about 160 mL, so it suits a small mug rather than a big one.
  • Allergens: milk. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.
  • Also on the label: it contains aspartame, a source of phenylalanine, so anyone with phenylketonuria (PKU) should skip it.

There is no caramel sauce in the box: the drizzle on the box picture is only a picture. Macchiato here means a milky caramel latte, not a strong espresso drink. It is made with hot water, not cold milk, so for a cold or milkier cup, dissolve the stick in a little hot water first.

Our guide

How to eat it

  • For a hot caramel latte, tip one stick into a heat-proof mug.
  • Pour in about 160 mL of water straight off the boil, quickly, so it foams.
  • Stir straight away for about ten seconds.

Good to know

  • For a milkier cup, dissolve the stick in about 80 mL of hot water and top it up with about 80 mL of hot soy milk.
