About

Small, round, crisp milk biscuits made in Japan as a first biscuit for children from about nine months, and eaten by plenty of adults too. They taste plain and gently sweet, much like a Marie biscuit. Buy them if you want one plain biscuit the whole family can share; if you want an unsweetened teething rusk, this is the wrong box.

On the pack: カルケット (karu-ketto). The biscuits themselves are stamped CALCUIT.

What you're getting

  • A plain milk biscuit: no cream, chocolate or fruit, with milk, condensed milk and butter in the dough.
  • It is still a sweet biscuit, with sugar second on the ingredient list.
  • The texture is crisp and light.
  • It crumbles easily, so expect crumbs around the high chair.
  • Allergens: wheat, egg, milk and soy. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.
  • Also on the label: shortening and margarine, either of which may be made with animal fat, and annatto, a natural orange colour made from a seed.

As with any finger food, give it with your child sitting up and an adult watching, never lying down or while being carried on your back, and keep a drink beside it.

Ingredients

Wheat flour (made in Japan), sugar, milk, starch, shortening, sweetened condensed milk, fructo-oligosaccharide, margarine, skim milk powder, butter, dried egg yolk, salt

eggshell calcium, raising agent, emulsifier, flavouring, ferric pyrophosphate, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, annatto colour (contains wheat, egg, milk and soy).

Our guide

How to eat it

Good to know

  • Give one biscuit at a time, with your child sitting up and you watching; never while they are lying down or being carried on your back.
  • Keep a drink beside it: the maker suggests cooled boiled water or barley tea.
