About

Each one is a whole roasted peanut inside a crunchy coat made with prawn, a sweet-and-salty Japanese snack Kasugai has made since 1969. Think of a coated peanut from the snack aisle, with a prawn aroma and a coat that is sweeter than you expect. Buy it if you like a sweet-salty snack with a drink; if you want a plain salted peanut, this is the wrong bag.

On the pack: えびピーナ (ebi pīna). Ebi is Japanese for prawn. The squid version from the same maker, いかピーナ (ika pīna), is a different snack, and squid is a different allergen from prawn, so check which bag you have.

What you're getting

  • The coat is sweet as well as salty, which surprises people who expected a salted peanut.
  • It looks hard but bites light and crisp, with the whole peanut in the middle.
  • The prawn comes through as an aroma; people who want a strong seafood taste find it mild.
  • A snack for a drink: it goes with a beer, and with a cup of green tea.
  • There is prawn in the coat and a whole peanut in every piece, so it is not for anyone who avoids either.
  • Allergens: We have not been able to confirm the allergen panel for this pack; read the pack's own label before you buy.

Every piece holds a whole peanut, so keep the bag away from small children.

Our guide

How to eat it

Good to know

  • They are eaten as they are, straight from the bag. Kasugai's own recipe also uses them as a crumb: crush a bag inside a thick plastic bag with a rolling pin, leaving some texture, press it onto five chicken tenderloins cut into thirds, and shallow-fry in about 2 cm of oil over medium-low heat until golden.
  • The coat is sweet, so salt the chicken at the end, not before.
  • Keep the bag away from small children: every piece holds a whole peanut.

The maker

Where it comes from

  • Kasugai
  • Aichi

Kasugai, a confectioner in Nagoya, in Aichi prefecture in central Japan, has made bean snacks since 1951, and in 1967 it wrapped a peanut in a squid-flavoured coat, the first of its peana line. The prawn one followed in 1969, and both are still sold side by side.
