About
Japanese jelly beans in seven fruit flavours, each a crisp sugar shell around a chewy centre set with agar rather than gelatine. Agar is a jelly made from seaweed, and these beans are chewier than the soft gourmet kind. Buy them if you like a jelly bean with real chew; if you want the soft gourmet kind, this is the wrong bag.
On the pack: ゼリービンズ (zeh-ree-bins), with JELLY BEANS in English.
What you're getting
- Strawberry, melon, peach, grape, orange, banana and lemon.
- Very sweet: glucose syrup and sugar are the first two ingredients.
- An everyday supermarket sweet in Japan, often bought for children.
- The bag has a zip along the top and closes again.
- Allergens: milk, from the lactose in the beans. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.
- Also on the label: artificial colours tartrazine (102), sunset yellow (110), allura red (129) and brilliant blue (133), and red cabbage colour. The glazing agent is not named, so it may be shellac, which comes from insects.
They can stick to your teeth, so go gently if you have dental fillings.

The maker
Where it comes from
- Kasugai
- Aichi
- Founded 1928
Kasugai has been in business in Nagoya, in central Japan, since 1928. Its jelly beans start as a jelly of agar, poured into moulds pressed into cornstarch.
Once the jelly has set, the sugar shell is built up on each bean by hand, a job Kasugai's craftsmen train at for a year or more, and the beans are then glossed in a pan.
