About

Soft, chewy milk candies with a rich, sweet milk taste, closer to a soft caramel than to a hard lolly. The cream, butter and condensed milk in them come from Hokkaido, Japan's northern island. Buy them if you like milk caramels; if you want a sweet that is not very sweet, this is the wrong bag.

On the pack: 北海道ソフト, with Hokkaido Soft in English.

What you're getting

  • A chew, not a candy to suck: it is soft enough to bite straight away and easy to eat.
  • It can stick to your teeth a little, as a soft caramel does.
  • The candies themselves are made by Ribon in Aichi, in central Japan, not in Hokkaido.
  • Each candy is wrapped on its own. The 110 g on the pack includes the wrappers, which works out at about 25 small candies a bag.
  • Allergens: milk, wheat and soy. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.
  • Also on the label: gelatine, and Ribon does not say what animal it comes from.

The maker

Where it comes from

  • Ribon
  • Aichi
  • Founded 1970

Ribon began making wafers in Nagoya, a city in central Japan, in 1970 and moved into candy in 1980. Its best-known sweet in Japan is a plum candy, first sold in 1985.

This soft milk candy came in September 1990, the year Ribon put a soft-candy line into its factory at Komaki, in Aichi. It was first sold as a milk soft candy called Hokkaido, and it became one of the company's big hits.
