Why we say this

Blendy Stick, the range this café au lait belongs to, was the top brand by sales value and cups in Japan's single-serve stick-drink market every year from August 2010 to July 2026 (AGF, from Intage, a Japanese retail sales tracker).

About

An instant café au lait powder in eight single-cup sticks that you stir into hot water, and it tastes of mild coffee and milk with a medium sweetness. Buy it if you like a sweet white coffee, or find black coffee too bitter; if you want a strong coffee or one without sweetness, this is the wrong product.

On the pack: カフェオレ (ka-feh-oh-reh, "café au lait", coffee with milk), under the Blendy stick logo.

What you're getting

  • Of the Blendy café au lait sticks we sell, it is sweeter than the espresso and barely sweet ones and less sweet than the extra-milky Torokeru ("melting") Milk one.
  • The sweetness comes from sugar plus two sweeteners, aspartame and acesulfame K.
  • The coffee taste is mild rather than strong.
  • The milkiness comes from creamer powder and milk protein, not fresh milk.
  • It is an ordinary caffeinated coffee, not a decaf, so treat it like any other cup of coffee late in the evening.
  • Allergens: milk. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.
  • Also on the label: it contains aspartame, a source of phenylalanine, so anyone with phenylketonuria (PKU) should skip it.

To make it iced, dissolve the stick in about 90 mL of hot water before you add the ice; it is not one of the sticks made to stir straight into cold milk.

Our guide

How to eat it

  • For a hot café au lait, tip one stick into a mug.
  • Pour in about 180 mL of hot water, AGF's usual amount for its sticks.
  • Stir until no powder is left floating on top.

Good to know

  • If it tastes weak, use a little less water next time, or make it with hot milk instead of water.
  • For an iced one, dissolve the stick in about 90 mL of hot water first, then add five or six ice cubes and stir until cold.
