Why we say this

Blendy Stick, the range this café au lait belongs to, was the top brand by sales value and cups in Japan's single-serve stick-drink market every year from August 2010 to July 2026 (AGF, from Intage, a Japanese retail sales tracker).

About

An instant café au lait powder in eight single-cup sticks that you stir into hot water, and it tastes sweet and milky with very little bitterness. Buy it if you like your coffee sweet and mild, or don't much like coffee at all; if you want a strong coffee or one without sweetness, this is the wrong product.

On the pack: とろけるミルク カフェオレ (to-ro-keh-ru mil-ku ka-feh-oh-reh, "melting milk café au lait"), under the Blendy stick logo.

What you're getting

  • It is the sweet, milk-heavy one of the Blendy café au lait sticks we sell, sweetened with sugar and two sweeteners, aspartame and acesulfame K.
  • The coffee is mild: the cup tastes more of milk and sugar than of coffee.
  • The milkiness comes from creamer powder and skim milk powder, not fresh milk.
  • Torokeru means melting, and it is part of the name, not a promise about the texture.
  • Allergens: milk. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.
  • Also on the label: it contains aspartame, a source of phenylalanine, so anyone with phenylketonuria (PKU) should skip it.

It is not the bottled Boss café au lait with a similar Japanese name, made by the Japanese drinks company Suntory; this is a powder you stir into hot water yourself.

Our guide

How to eat it

  • For a hot café au lait, tip one stick into a mug.
  • Pour in about 180 mL of hot water, AGF's usual amount for its sticks.
  • Stir until no powder is left floating on top.

Good to know

  • If it tastes thin, use a little less water next time, or make it with warm milk instead of water for a richer cup.
  • For an iced one, dissolve the stick in about 90 mL of hot water first, then add five or six ice cubes and stir until cold.
  • Make it just before you drink it; made ahead in a flask, it can separate.
