About

A soft-baked cookie with matcha worked into the dough, chocolate chips and a little sweet white bean paste in the middle, twelve to a bag and each one wrapped. It tastes clearly of green tea, with a gentle bitterness. Buy it if you want a soft cookie that tastes of matcha; if you want matcha that is properly bitter, this is the wrong cookie.

On the pack: カントリーマアム お濃い抹茶 (kan-tree mah-am, oh-koy mat-cha), with RICH MATCHA in English underneath.

What you're getting

  • Two doughs in each cookie: a crisp layer on the outside and a soft, moist one inside.
  • The matcha is in the dough itself, so it is in every bite, not just a coating or a cream.
  • The centre holds sweet white bean paste, a smooth filling of sweetened white beans.
  • The name says rich, but the bitterness is mild.
  • It is a limited edition in Japan, released in February 2026, so it is not on shelves all year.
  • Allergens: contains wheat, milk, egg and soy. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.

To warm them, take them out of their wrappers first, and don't cover them with cling film.

Our guide

How to eat it

  • For a warm cookie with a soft middle, take five out of their wrappers and put them on a plate.
  • Microwave them for about 20 seconds at 500 to 600 W, uncovered, with no cling film.

Good to know

  • They come out hot, so give them a moment before you bite.
  • From the fridge they turn denser and cool, a different texture from the cupboard.

The maker

Where it comes from

  • Fujiya
  • Tokyo

Country Ma'am is Fujiya's soft cookie, modelled on the freshly baked cookies popular in America in the 1970s and 80s. Each one is made from two different doughs baked slowly at a low heat, so the outside crisps while the middle stays moist, and the recipe has been improved more than 40 times since it first went on sale.

This matcha edition uses tea from Kagoshima in southern Japan, supplied by Ikeda Seicha, a tea merchant.
