About

Small soda-flavoured gummies from Japan, made harder and chewier than Kasugai's ordinary Tsubugumi gummies, in a 70 g bag. Katai means hard. Buy it if you like a gummy you have to work at; if you want a soft, quick chew, this is the wrong bag.

On the pack: つぶグミ カタイソーダ (tsoo-boo goo-mee ka-tie soh-da). Tsubu means a small bead.

What you're getting

  • The badge かたさ2倍 on the pack means twice as firm as ordinary Tsubugumi: the centre takes a proper bite.
  • Soda flavours, including cola and grape soda.
  • Some people find it less hard than the name suggests.
  • The beads are small, so you can eat a few at a time.
  • Allergens: contains milk and soy; the milk is lactose. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.
  • Also on the label: made in a factory that also handles prawn, wheat and peanut. The gummies are set with gelatine from an unstated animal, and the unnamed glazing agent (the coating that gives sweets a shine) may be shellac, from insects. Anyone who avoids animal products should skip it.

Keep the bag below 28 °C and out of the sun, as the pack's storage line says.

Allergens
Contains
  • Milk
  • Soy
May contain
  • Prawn
  • Wheat
  • Peanut

Not ingredients — these are made or handled on the same equipment as this product, so traces are possible. We list every shared-equipment allergen stated on the pack or by the maker.

Dietary notes

The gummies are set with gelatine, an animal product, and the pack does not say which animal it comes from. The glazing agent (the coating that gives sweets a shine) is not named, so it may be shellac, which comes from insects. The gelatine rules it out for vegetarians and vegans.

For your safety, please check both the information on this page and the printed label on the pack. If anything is unclear or the information differs, please contact us before consuming the product.

The maker

Where it comes from

  • Kasugai
  • Aichi
  • Founded 1928

Kasugai has made sweets in Nagoya, a city in Aichi in central Japan, since 1928, and its Tsubugumi gummies date from 1994. Katai Soda takes the line's soda bag and, by the pack's own badge, makes the centre twice as firm.

It first came out in February 2024 and is still in Japanese shops.
