$9.42 per 100 gThe same open-flame-roasted almond as Meiji's red box, wrapped this time in a milk chocolate blended with matcha from Uji, the tea district south of Kyoto, instead of the plain coating. The sweetness is pulled back so the tea comes forward: there is a real green-tea bitterness in the coating, and then the almond's dry snap. If you have been disappointed by matcha confectionery that turns out to be sweet green icing, this is the one that answers back.
On the pack: アーモンドチョコレート抹茶 (aamondo chokoreeto maccha), almond chocolate, matcha.
One more thing. Like the rest of Meiji's nut range, vegetable fat stands in for part of the cocoa butter here.
The maker's ingredient list, translated from the Japanese pack. Anything after the break is an additive — the Japanese label lists those separately.
Almonds (USA), sugar, vegetable fat, lactose, whole milk powder, cocoa butter, matcha, skim milk powder, reduced starch syrup
emulsifier, glazing agent, antioxidants (vitamin C, vitamin E, rosemary extract), colours (gardenia, flavonoid), flavouring. Contains milk, almond and soy.

The maker declares:
The coating carries a glazing agent: shellac, a resin from an insect. These are not vegan, and some vegetarians avoid it.

Counts of how many reviews mentioned each thing, not a score. One review can mention several. Every quote is our translation, with the original Japanese beneath it.
Just as I imagined — the matcha flavour really comes through, and it was delicious.

But isn't the box far too big for how little is inside?
しかし、内容量が少ない割に箱が大きすぎでは?

An almond chocolate with delicious matcha. It felt like there wasn't much inside.

The gentle bitterness of the matcha and the sweetness of the chocolate are just right, and the almond's crunch is a good accent.

Reasonably tasty, but not much different from the regular one. And expensive!

The maker
This is the version Meiji makes for people passing through. It belongs to a range built for visitors to Japan, which is why the box is green and gold and covered in traditional pattern where the everyday one is plain red, and why there is a code on the pack that opens an explanation in your own language. That is Meiji's intent, not how it is actually eaten: in Japan this box is bought at convenience stores like anything else.
The tea is from Uji, the district south of Kyoto whose name is the one Japanese shoppers look for on a matcha label. Meiji blends two Uji varieties for this coating rather than using one, and pulls the sweetness back so the aroma has somewhere to go.
The almond underneath is the same open-flame-roasted nut that goes into the everyday red box.
