$17.16 per 100 gSmall banana-shaped pieces with a hard sugar shell over soft chocolate: you crunch through the shell first, and the shell is where the banana flavour sits. That shell is also why this one handles a warm bag better than ordinary chocolate does. The box itself folds into a banana, which is aimed squarely at children and works on most adults too.
バナナチョコ, the name on the box, if you're matching it to something you saw in Japan.
A few things worth knowing. It has not been discontinued: that rumour is a mix-up with a Meiji ice cream of almost the same name that ended in 2026, and this box is still in Meiji's current line-up. It is also not choco-banana, the whole banana on a stick sold at Japanese summer festivals; that is the commonest mix-up in both languages. If you remember colourful pieces inside, your memory is right and the box has changed. It is one colour now. And if you remember a bigger box, that is right too: it used to be 42 g.
It's a small box, the sort of thing that rides along with a bigger order rather than travelling on its own.
The maker's ingredient list, translated from the Japanese pack. Anything after the break is an additive — the Japanese label lists those separately.
Sugar (manufactured overseas and domestically), cocoa mass, whole milk powder, starch, vegetable fat, banana powder, cocoa butter, starch syrup, gelatine
emulsifier, eggshell calcium, thickener (gum arabic), flavouring, glazing agent, gardenia colour. Contains egg, milk, soy, banana and gelatine.
The printed label on the pack is always the authority on ingredients and allergens, not this page — please read it in full before you rely on our summary. If you are unsure about an ingredient, contact us.
The maker declares:
Gelatine is named outright on Meiji's ingredient list, and the list stops there: it does not say what animal the gelatine is from.

In their own words
Counts of how many reviews mentioned each thing, not a score. One review can mention several. Every quote is our translation, with the original Japanese beneath it.
I love chocolate, but in summer it melts when you carry it around — this one doesn't, so I keep it in my bag and eat it when I get peckish.
チョコ大好きなのですが、夏は持ち歩くと溶けるけど、これは溶けないからバッグに入れて小腹が空いたときに食べてます。

It's coated all around, so it doesn't melt easily — that's another thing I like!

The banana aroma is enorrrmous and the taste is very artificial.

The outside is the crisp sort, like Marble Chocolate.

Inside it's just chocolate, but the yellow outside is crunchy with a faint banana flavour.

Apparently you can make the box into a banana shape, but does it not work properly while the sweets are still inside?
箱をバナナのような形にできるようなのですが中身入りだとうまくできないのでしょうか?

There used to be all sorts of colourful bananas inside, but now it's just the normal colour, isn't it.

The texture is good too, and I like that it doesn't have that oddly cloying banana smell.

The maker
Banana Choco is filed on Meiji's own site under two headings at once: small chocolates, and kids' and character lines. That is the maker's own description of where this box belongs, and it is why the carton is a toy before it is a carton.
What Meiji does not do is describe the taste. Its product page is two sentences, and both of them are about folding the box.
