About

Small, crisp milk biscuits that melt quickly in the mouth, made in Japan as a first biscuit for babies from nine months. They taste much like a Marie biscuit, only softer and more powdery, and plenty of adults eat them too. Buy them if you want a finger biscuit made for babies from nine months; if you want an unsweetened teething rusk, this is the wrong box.

On the pack: マンナビスケット (man-na biscuit).

What you're getting

  • A plain milk biscuit: no chocolate, cream or fruit, with milk and condensed milk in the dough.
  • It is a properly sweet biscuit, with sugar second on the ingredient list.
  • The box holds two 43 g bags, and the maker's guide is half a bag a day, so have a sealed container ready for the rest.
  • It crumbles as it melts, so expect crumbs on the floor and the high chair.
  • Allergens: milk, wheat and soy, and it is made on equipment shared with egg. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.
  • Also on the label: shell calcium, an ingredient made from ground seashells. It is not a declared allergen, and whether it carries any mollusc protein is not known, so if your child reacts to molluscs, check with your doctor first. The shortening may be made with animal fat.

As with any finger food, give it with your child sitting up and an adult watching, never lying down or while being carried on your back, and keep a drink beside it.

Ingredients

Wheat flour (made in Japan), sugar, milk, corn starch, shortening, butter oil, sweetened condensed milk, vegetable oil, salt

shell calcium, raising agent, flavouring, emulsifier (from soy), ferric pyrophosphate, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin D.

Our guide

How to eat it

Good to know

  • Give one biscuit at a time, with your child sitting up and you watching; never while they are lying down or being carried on your back.
  • Keep a drink beside it: the maker suggests cooled boiled water or barley tea.

The maker

Where it comes from

  • Morinaga
  • Tokyo
  • Founded 1899

Morinaga first made Manna in 1930, as a weaning food and a baby's first snack. The name comes from manna, the food from heaven in the Old Testament, which Morinaga calls "the food of love".

The recipe has changed over the years, and the egg has been taken out, but the small milk biscuit is still the flagship of the Manna line.
