About

Soft, light wafers made in Japan as a snack for babies from nine months, packed two to a small bag. They melt quickly but keep a light crisp, and plenty of adults eat them too. Buy them if you want a finger snack made for babies from nine months; if you want a snack that leaves no crumbs, this is the wrong box.

On the pack: マンナウェファー (man-na wafer).

What you're getting

  • Fourteen wafers in all, two to each of seven small bags.
  • Between the wafer sheets is a thin layer of milky cream.
  • It is a sweet wafer, with sugar third on the ingredient list.
  • Expect crumbs and powder: the wafers break easily, and a small fist turns one to dust.
  • Allergens: milk, wheat and soy, and it is made on equipment shared with egg. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.
  • Also on the label: shell calcium, an ingredient made from ground seashells. It is not a declared allergen, and whether it carries any mollusc protein is not known, so if your child reacts to molluscs, check with your doctor first. The shortening may be made with animal fat.

As with any finger food, give it with your child sitting up and an adult watching, never lying down or while being carried on your back, and keep a drink beside it.

Ingredients

Wheat flour (made in Japan), shortening, sugar, whole milk powder, vegetable oil, potato starch, corn starch, salt

shell calcium, raising agent, emulsifier (from soy), ferric pyrophosphate, flavouring, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin D.

Our guide

How to eat it

Good to know

  • Give one wafer at a time, with your child sitting up and you watching; never while they are lying down or being carried on your back.
  • Keep a drink beside it: the maker suggests cooled boiled water or barley tea.
  • Open each small bag over a plate or tray: the two wafers are packed tight, and powder escapes as the bag tears.
  • The maker's guide is three small bags a day.

The maker

Where it comes from

  • Morinaga
  • Tokyo
  • Founded 1899

Morinaga's Manna line began in 1930 with a milk biscuit made as a baby's first snack. The name comes from manna, the food from heaven in the Old Testament.

The wafer is the line's second product, made to melt easily in a small mouth.
