Product information

About

A small domed egg cookie that is crisp when you bite it and then crumbles in the mouth, with a gentle taste of egg and sugar. Picture a plain sweet biscuit from the tin, made with egg and egg yolk, that breaks into layered crumbs. Buy it if you want a light cookie for a cup of tea or coffee; if you want a rich butter shortbread, this is the wrong box.

On the pack: ムーンライト (moon-light).

What you're getting

  • Fourteen cookies in seven sealed bags of two, so you open only what you eat.
  • Each cookie is small, about 8 g, and one bag of two is a light snack with a drink.
  • It tastes mostly of egg and sugar, a little like tamago boro, the small melt-away egg drops sold in Japan.
  • There is no butter in it. The buttery note comes from butter oil, a milk fat, with margarine and shortening.
  • It is a dry cookie, so pour a drink first.
  • Allergens: egg, milk, wheat and soy. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.
  • Also on the label: the shortening and margarine may be made with animal fat.

The Japanese box calls it a cookie, but it is the crisp, plain kind, not a soft or chewy one. It is made by Morinaga, not Bourbon, another Japanese biscuit maker. Some boxes come in a limited character print; the cookies inside are the same.

Our guide

How to eat it

Good to know

  • Dip it in milky coffee or warm milk and straight out again; left to soak, it loses its crunch and breaks up.
  • If you sandwich cream or ice cream between two cookies, eat them the same day: in the fridge they turn soft and cake-like within about six hours.

Where it comes from

  • Morinaga

  • Founded 1899

Morinaga launched Moonlight in 1960, and the company still calls it one of its flagship products. Morinaga itself began in 1899, when its founder came home from America and opened a small workshop making Western sweets.
