About

Pineapple hard candies shaped like a slice of tinned pineapple, each one a flat ring with a hole in the middle. They taste sweet and sour, with a clear pineapple flavour, and they are not sickly sweet. Buy them if you like a fruity boiled lolly you can suck slowly; if you want a soft or chewy sweet, this is the wrong bag.

On the pack: パインアメ, with PINEAPPLE CANDY in English. Pine Ame is said "pine ah-meh": Pine is the maker's name, and ame means candy.

What you're getting

  • A flat hard candy, so it sits easily on the tongue.
  • The rim has small ridges you can feel.
  • Sucked slowly, it keeps its hole until near the end.
  • Each candy is wrapped on its own. The 110 g on the pack includes the wrappers, which works out at about 22 candies a bag.
  • Near the end, as the ring wears thin, the edge can turn sharp enough to catch your tongue.
  • Allergens: milk, from the skim milk powder in the candy. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.

The hole is there for the look: blowing through it makes no sound, so it is not a whistle sweet. Keep the bag away from small children, because a hard candy can lodge in a small child's throat.

Our guide

How to eat it

Good to know

  • They are eaten as they are, one at a time from the wrapper; the other use is a pineapple yoghurt: stir 8 candies into 400 g of plain yoghurt, cover it and leave it in the fridge for a day. At 6 hours they are still whole; by 24 hours they have melted into a pineapple syrup.
  • If the candies turn white on the surface, that is damp air making the sugar crystallise again, not mould. It is harmless, and keeping the bag closed and dry helps prevent it.

The maker

Where it comes from

  • Pine
  • Osaka
  • Founded 1948

Pine is a sweet maker from Osaka, started in 1948, and this pineapple candy, sold since 1951, is its flagship. The very first ones were flat, with a pineapple slice pressed into the top and no hole at all.

The company's first president held that the candy was not finished until it had a hole, like a real ring of tinned pineapple. So at first the holes were poked by hand, with a bamboo chopstick wrapped in cotton, until a machine took over in 1953 and gave the candy the shape it still has today.
