About

Orange hard candies, each one a flat ring with a hole in the middle, the same shape as the pineapple candy from the same maker, Pine. They taste sweet and orangey, with only a little sourness. Buy them if you like a gentle fruit lolly to suck slowly; if you want a sharp, sour orange hit, this is the wrong bag.

On the pack: オレンジアメ, with ORANGE CANDY in English. Ame (said "ah-meh") means candy, and Pine is the maker's name, not the fruit.

What you're getting

  • Less sour than Pine's pineapple candy, so it suits someone who finds that one too sharp.
  • Made with orange juice, and with no milk among the ingredients, unlike the pineapple candy.
  • The ring is easy to keep on the tongue.
  • Each candy is wrapped on its own. The 110 g on the pack includes the wrappers, which works out at about 20 candies a bag.
  • Allergens: orange, from the orange juice in it. Australia's allergen list has no orange category, so the Australian label's allergen statement will not show it. Check the ingredient list; ours is the fuller list.
  • May contain: milk, so it is not one for a milk allergy even though milk is not an ingredient.

Keep the bag away from small children, because a hard candy can lodge in a small child's throat.

Our guide

How to eat it

Good to know

  • If the candies turn white on the surface, that is damp air making the sugar crystallise again, not mould. It is harmless, and keeping the bag closed and dry helps prevent it.

The maker

Where it comes from

  • Pine
  • Osaka
  • Founded 1948

Pine is a sweet maker from Osaka, started in 1948 and known in Japan for its pineapple candy. It first made this orange candy in 1965, as a sister to the pineapple one.

The orange candy went off sale in 1992 and came back in 2000. In 2021 Pine reworked it for the first time in 16 years, doubling the orange juice in it and making it in the factory built for the pineapple candy family.
