About

A creamy Japanese clam chowder-style soup in three single-cup sachets: shellfish stock in a creamy potato base, made up with boiling water. It tastes of creamy potato and shellfish stock, but there are no real clam pieces: the shellfish is in it as scallop and clam extracts and oyster powder, and the clam-looking pieces are clam-flavoured fish cake. Buy it if you want a smooth, seafood-tasting cream soup in a mug; if you want a chunky chowder full of clams, this is the wrong cup.

On the pack: クラムチャウダー風 (koo-rah-moo chow-dah foo), with "Clam Chowder" in English. The 風 at the end means "-style", and the ポタージュ (potage) printed beside it means a smooth, blended soup.

What you're getting

  • The soup is creamy and rich, with small pieces of dried potato and parsley alongside the fish cake.
  • It is already seasoned, so you add only water, and one sachet makes one cup.
  • Jikkuri Kotokoto (jee-koo-ree koh-toh-koh-toh, roughly "slowly simmered") is the range name on the box, and these boxes sit at the premium end of it.
  • This is the box introduced in March 2026, named クラムチャウダー風 ("clam chowder-style"); the older clam box, named 濃厚クラムポタージュ ("rich clam potage"), is a different recipe with no clam or potato pieces. The clam soups with こんがりパン on the pack, a bag and a cup that come with bread croutons, are different products again.
  • Allergens: wheat, egg, milk, soy, mollusc and fish. Japan's allergen chart has no mollusc or general fish category, so the pack names the shellfish extracts and the fish cake only in its ingredients. Read that ingredient list before you rely on ours: on mollusc and fish, ours is the fuller list.
  • Also on the label: there is chicken in it, from the chicken stock powder. Anyone who avoids meat should skip it.

The maker

Where it comes from

  • Pokka Sapporo Food & Beverage
  • Aichi

Pokka Sapporo, based in Nagoya, a city in Aichi prefecture in central Japan, has made soup since 1980. Its Jikkuri Kotokoto range, named for slow, gentle simmering, started in 1996, so 2026 is its thirtieth year, and it has run to more than 300 products.

The boxed soups are the range's top tier, made with the maker's own bouillon and cream. This clam box arrived in March 2026, when the box range was renewed for the anniversary.
