About

A rich, sweet Japanese pumpkin cream soup in three single-cup sachets: tip one into a mug, add boiling water, stir and wait a minute. It tastes of sweet pumpkin and milk, rich rather than light, with no pumpkin pieces in it. Buy it if you like a sweet, creamy cup of soup; if you want a savoury, peppery pumpkin soup, this is the wrong cup.

On the pack: かぼちゃポタージュ (kah-boh-chah poh-tah-zhoo), with "Squash Potage" in English. Kabocha is the Japanese word for pumpkin, and a potage is a smooth, blended soup.

What you're getting

  • It is already sweetened and made with cream and butter powders, so it needs only hot water. Pokka's own recipes also mix it with milk, as a soup or a sauce.
  • One sachet makes one cup, and the box holds three.
  • Jikkuri Kotokoto (jee-koo-ree koh-toh-koh-toh, roughly "slowly simmered") is the range name on the box, and these boxes sit at the premium end of it.
  • This is the box introduced in March 2026, with 甘熟 ("sweet-ripened") on the front; the older pumpkin box, named 濃厚かぼちゃクリームポタージュ ("rich pumpkin cream potage"), is a different recipe.
  • Allergens: wheat, milk and soy. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.
  • Also on the label: there is chicken in it, from the chicken stock powder. Anyone who avoids meat should skip it.

Stir the moment the water goes in and keep stirring for about ten seconds before you leave it for its minute.

The maker

Where it comes from

  • Pokka Sapporo Food & Beverage
  • Aichi

Pokka Sapporo, based in Nagoya, a city in Aichi prefecture in central Japan, has made soup since 1980. Its Jikkuri Kotokoto range, named for slow, gentle simmering, started in 1996, so 2026 is its thirtieth year, and it has run to more than 300 products.

The boxed soups are the range's top tier, made with the maker's own bouillon and cream. This pumpkin box arrived in March 2026, when the box range was renewed for the anniversary.
