About

A ready-made Japanese curry in a sealed pouch, with potato, carrot and onion and no meat, that you heat and pour over rice. It is Japanese-style curry: thickened with flour, with sugar and browned onion in the sauce, so it eats more like a thick gravy than an Indian or Thai curry. Buy it for a meat-free Japanese curry with some heat; if you want chicken or beef in your curry, this is the wrong pouch.

おいしい野菜カレー, oishii yasai karē, "tasty vegetable curry", is the Japanese on the front of the pouch.

What you're getting

  • How hot it is: the back of the pouch prints a heat scale from 1 (Mild) to 5 (Hot), and this is the 5, the hottest of the three, above the Medium Hot (3) and the Mild (1). Black pepper and chilli come first among its spices; if you want it gentle, take the Mild.
  • What is in the sauce: potato, carrot and onion in a thick sauce. One 210 g pouch is one serve.
  • Not a full meal on its own: it is sauce and vegetables with no meat, so you add the rice, and a topping if you want more. A crumbed pork cutlet is a classic Japanese curry topping (that is katsu curry); a fried egg or cheese also works.
  • Heating it safely: the pouch never goes in the microwave, sealed or open. Warm it in boiling water, or pour the curry into a bowl first.
  • Made for sale overseas: S&B makes this pouch in Japan for export, so the instructions on the back are in English.
  • Allergens: contains wheat, celery and mustard. Australia's allergen chart has no celery or mustard category, so those two cannot appear in the pack's allergen box; both are in the ingredient list, among the spices. Read that ingredient list before you rely on ours: on celery and mustard, ours is the fuller list.
  • Also on the label: there is no meat, fish, egg or milk in the ingredients, so it is vegetarian.

Our guide

How to eat it

  • Bring a pot of water to the boil.
  • Drop in the sealed pouch and let it boil, uncovered, for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Lift the pouch out with tongs: the pouch and the curry are very hot.
  • Cut across the top and pour the curry over a plate of hot rice.

Good to know

  • Microwave instead: never microwave the pouch, sealed or open. Cut it open, pour the curry into a microwave-safe bowl, cover it and heat for 1 minute on High, then let it stand for 30 seconds.
  • Another way to use it is curry udon: heat the curry with 200 mL of water and half a tablespoon of 3× concentrated noodle soup base (mentsuyu), then pour it over a bowl of cooked udon noodles.

Where it comes from

  • S&B
  • Tokyo
  • Founded 1923

S&B began in Tokyo in 1923, when its founder succeeded in making Japan's first homegrown curry powder. The letters stand for Sun and Bird, part of the company's mark since 1931.

Its Golden Curry roux blocks, which you cook a whole pot of curry from, date from 1966. This pouch is one of S&B's ready-made curries: a vegetable curry with no meat.
