About

A sweetened caramel latte powder in four single-cup sticks, made in Japan and sold by Nestlé Japan under the Starbucks name, that you stir into hot water. It tastes of milky coffee with a light caramel flavour, and the coffee still comes through. Buy it if you want a quick, sweet caramel latte at home; if you want a strong caramel hit or an unsweetened coffee, this is the wrong product.

On the pack: キャラメル ラテ (kya-ra-meh-ru rah-teh), under STARBUCKS PREMIUM MIXES.

What you're getting

  • Sugar and milk powder are already in the stick, so you add only water.
  • The caramel comes from a flavouring, not a sauce or syrup, and the caramel taste is light.
  • Made with water just off the boil it turns lumpy; let the water cool a little and stir well.
  • People are divided on the sweetness: some find it too sweet, others say it is not too sweet at all.
  • There are four sticks in the box, so it makes four cups.
  • It is a Japanese supermarket product sold by Nestlé Japan under licence from Starbucks, not a drink from a Starbucks café and not the VIA instant sticks sold in Starbucks stores.
  • Allergens: milk. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.
Ingredients

Our guide

How to eat it

  • For a hot caramel latte, tip one stick into a cup.
  • Pour in 180 mL of water at about 85 °C.
  • Stir well until the powder has dissolved and the top turns foamy.

Good to know

  • Water straight off the boil leaves lumps and no foam: pour it into another cup first and it cools to about the right heat.
  • For an iced one, stir the stick into 90 mL of 85 °C water, then add five or six ice cubes and stir again.
