About

A sweetened matcha latte powder in four single-cup sticks, made in Japan and sold by Nestlé Japan under the Starbucks name, that you stir into hot water. It tastes of strong matcha with plenty of milk. Buy it if you want a quick matcha latte at home; if you want plain matcha powder to whisk yourself, this is the wrong product.

On the pack: 抹茶 ラテ (matcha rah-teh), under STARBUCKS PREMIUM MIXES.

What you're getting

  • Sugar and milk powder are already in the stick, so you add only water.
  • Made with water just off the boil it turns lumpy; let the water cool a little and the top foams as it does on the box.
  • People are divided on the sweetness: some find it a little too sweet, others less sweet than other matcha sticks.
  • It is a Japanese supermarket product sold by Nestlé Japan under licence from Starbucks, not a drink from a Starbucks café and not the VIA instant sticks sold in Starbucks stores.
  • Allergens: milk. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.
Ingredients

Sugar, skim milk powder, creaming powder (non-fat milk, glucose syrup, vegetable oil), matcha, dextrin, lactose, vegetable oil

pH regulator, sodium caseinate.

Our guide

How to eat it

  • For a hot matcha latte, tip one stick into a cup.
  • Pour in 180 mL of water at about 85 °C.
  • Stir quickly until the top turns foamy.

Good to know

  • Water straight off the boil leaves lumps and no foam: pour it into another cup first and it cools to about the right heat.
  • For an iced one, stir the stick into 90 mL of 85 °C water, then add five or six ice cubes and stir again.
