About

Bite-size pieces of flaky Japanese puff pastry with a smooth milk chocolate centre, loose in a 73 g box.

Buy it if you want a croissant-style crunch with your chocolate; if you want a mouthful of chocolate, this is the wrong snack.

パイの実 is the name on the box, said pie no mee. It means "pie fruit".

What you're getting

  • Taste: Sweet milk chocolate inside a sweet, glazed pastry with a little salt in it.
  • Texture: 64 thin, flaky layers of pastry under a crisp sugar glaze. It drops crumbs, so eat it over a plate.
  • How much chocolate: The chocolate is a filling, not a layer, and the pastry carries most of the flavour.
  • The box: The pieces sit loose in the box, not in sealed packs, so it suits sharing or finishing in one sitting.
  • Allergens: Contains wheat, milk and soy, and may contain egg. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.
Ingredients

Wheat flour (made in Japan), margarine, sugar, vegetable oil, cocoa mass, maltose, lactose, cocoa powder, whey powder, whole milk powder, salt

Our guide

How to eat it

Good to know

  • Try them cold: keep the box in the fridge or freezer and eat them straight from it.
  • Once the box is open the pieces go soft in the air, so finish them or seal the rest in an airtight bag.

The maker

Where it comes from

  • Lotte
  • Tokyo

Lotte launched Pie no Mi in 1979. A designer took the idea from the breadfruit tree, a dream of a tree that grows bread one loaf after another, and drew pies hanging from its branches instead. That is the name: pie fruit.

The two squirrels on the box are the line's characters, Pairu and Rokushii.

In 2024, for the snack's 45th anniversary, Lotte reworked the 64-layer pastry for more crunch. The reason it gave was its fans: asked about it, they said they think of Pie no Mi as a pastry first and a chocolate snack second.
