Product information

About

The cocoa-pastry Pie no Mi: bite-size puff pastry with chocolate worked into the dough as well as the filling, in a 69 g box.

Buy it if you like the original and want chocolate in every layer; if you want the classic, take the original 73 g box.

チョコを味わうパイの実<深みショコラ> is the name on the box. Pie no Mi means "pie fruit", and 深みショコラ, said fukami shokora, means "deep chocolat".

What you're getting

  • Taste: Chocolate pastry around a chocolate filling. It is still a milk chocolate, not a dark one.
  • Sweetness: A little less sweet than the original, with at most a faint bitter edge.
  • Texture: Thin, flaky layers of puff pastry. It drops crumbs, so eat it over a plate.
  • Size: A 69 g box, the size of every Pie no Mi flavour edition, against the original's 73 g.
  • Allergens: Contains wheat, milk, soy and hazelnut, and may contain egg.
  • Also on the label: Japan's allergen chart has no category for hazelnut, so the pack names the nut paste in its ingredient list, not in its allergen box. Our list is fuller than that chart; read the ingredient list for the nut it names before you rely on ours.
Ingredients

Wheat flour (made in Japan), margarine, sugar, vegetable oil, cocoa mass, maltose, lactose, cocoa powder, whole milk powder, whey powder, compound chocolate, salt, processed cacao, hazelnut paste

emulsifier (from soy), flavouring, cacao colour

Our guide

How to eat it

Good to know

  • Try them cold: keep the box in the fridge or freezer and eat them straight from it.
  • Once the box is open the pieces go soft in the air, so finish them or seal the rest in an airtight bag.

The maker

Where it comes from

  • Lotte
  • Tokyo

Lotte has made Pie no Mi since 1979. The 深みショコラ name, "deep chocolat", began in 2021 as an online-only box.

By 2022 it had become a regular box in Lotte's range, the one for people who want chocolate in the pastry itself as well as inside it.
