Product information

About

This is grape Hi-Chew, a stick of 12 individually wrapped Japanese soft chews. Each piece starts firm and springy, goes soft as you chew and then melts away, so you swallow it rather than spit it out like gum. Buy it if you like a sweet grape lolly with a firm chew that melts away; if you want something only lightly sweet, this is the wrong stick.

On the pack: ハイチュウ, which is Hi-Chew written in Japanese, beside a bunch of grapes.

What you're getting

  • This is the stick made in Japan for Japanese shops, not the export version sold outside Japan.
  • The taste is sweet with a little tartness; the grape is concentrated grape juice.
  • It is sticky on dental work: a piece can pull fillings or crowns loose.
  • Warmth softens it, so pieces can arrive softer than usual after a hot day in transit.
  • Allergens: contains apple, from a mixed fruit jam in the chew, and it is made on equipment shared with milk. Australia's allergen chart has no apple category, so apple cannot appear in the pack's allergen box. Check the ingredients, not the chart; ours is the fuller list.
  • Also on the label: gelatine, which the maker makes from pork skin. Anyone who avoids pork or meat should skip it.
Ingredients

Glucose syrup (made in Japan), sugar, vegetable fat, gelatine, concentrated grape juice, mixed jam (contains apple)

acidulant, glycerol, flavouring, emulsifier, red cabbage colour, gardenia blue colour

Our guide

How to eat it

Good to know

  • Chew carefully if you have fillings or crowns: the candy is sticky enough to pull dental work loose.
  • If a piece gets stuck in hair or clothes, soften it with warm water, not hot, and work it out.

The maker

Where it comes from

  • Morinaga & Co.
  • Tokyo

Hi-Chew was born in Japan in 1975 and is now sold in more than 30 countries, the United States above all.

Morinaga & Co. (not to be confused with Morinaga Milk, a separate company) makes it as a soft candy rather than a gum: a chew with real bite that dissolves as you eat it.
