Why we say this

Strawberry was the first Hi-Chew flavour when the line launched in Japan in 1975, and this stick ranked 50th by sales among more than 12,000 candies on monolog, a Japanese product-review site, in October 2026.

About

This is strawberry Hi-Chew from Japan, the flavour the whole line started with: a stick of 12 individually wrapped soft chews. It tastes of sweet-sour strawberry with a creamy strawberry-milk note, and the firm chew softens and is gone in a few bites. Buy it if you want a strong strawberry chew with a creamy note; if milk or pork gelatine is off your list, this is the wrong lolly.

On the pack: ハイチュウ ストロベリー (hai-choo sutoroberii), under HI-CHEW in large letters.

What you're getting

  • This is the stick made in Japan for Japanese shops, not the export strawberry Hi-Chew sold outside Japan.
  • The strawberry is strong and sweet, and tastes more of strawberry flavouring than of fresh fruit.
  • It is sticky on dental work: a piece can pull fillings or crowns loose.
  • Warmth softens it, so pieces can arrive softer than usual after a hot day in transit.
  • Allergens: milk, from a lactic-acid drink in the chew. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.
  • Also on the label: gelatine, which the maker makes from pork skin. Anyone who avoids pork or meat should skip it.

It is a soft candy you chew and swallow, not a gum.

Where it comes from

  • Morinaga & Co.
  • Tokyo
  • Founded 1899

Hi-Chew was born in Japan in 1975 with strawberry as its first flavour, and the paper stick followed in 1986. Morinaga & Co. (not to be confused with Morinaga Milk, a separate company) makes it as a soft candy rather than a gum.
