About

This is a Japanese butter chicken curry in a box with the rice already in it, hot in about two and a half minutes in the microwave, with no fridge before opening and nothing to add. It is Japan's lighter take on the dish: chicken in a tomato, butter and cream sauce with cumin and coriander, tangier and less rich than an Indian-restaurant butter chicken. Buy it for a quick hot lunch from the cupboard; if you want a rich, restaurant-strength butter chicken or a big dinner-sized serve, this is the wrong box.

On the pack: 丸美屋 バターチキンカレー (Marumiya, batā chikin karē).

What you're getting

  • 260 g in two parts: a bowl of Japanese-grown rice, 160 g of it, and a 100 g pouch of curry that you pour over the rice before heating.
  • Mild. There is chilli on the ingredient list, but it is not a hot curry.
  • A light single serve, and the chicken comes in small pieces, fewer than the photo on the box suggests: think lunch, and a big appetite will want two.
  • It keeps in the cupboard: the rice and the curry both store at room temperature, the curry in a sealed, heat-sterilised pouch, so nothing needs the fridge until you open it.
  • Allergens: contains milk and soy. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.
  • Also on the label: there is meat in it, chicken, so anyone who avoids meat should skip it. No wheat is on the ingredient list; that is as far as we can say on gluten.

Microwave or boiling water only: the bowl is not for an oven or a toaster oven. If you would rather try a Japanese dish you have not met before, the same range has rice bowls such as oyakodon, chicken and egg over rice.

Ingredients

Rice: Japanese-grown rice, acidity regulator.

Curry: chicken, tomato paste, margarine, sugar, cream, sautéed onion, cumin, garlic paste, salt, butter, curry powder, coriander, chilli, seasoning (amino acids), thickener (modified starch), emulsifier, flavouring.

Contains milk, soy and chicken.

Dietary notes

Chicken is the meat in the curry, in pieces rather than as an extract, and the sauce carries butter and cream. It is not vegetarian, vegan, halal or kosher.

Our guide

How to eat it

  • Peel the lid off the rice bowl completely. A lid left half on can make the bowl burst in the microwave.
  • Pour the curry pouch over the rice and spread it level.
  • Rest the peeled lid loosely back on top.
  • Heat it for about 2 minutes 30 seconds at 600 W, 3 minutes at 500 W or 1 minute 30 seconds at 1000 W. Set the time by hand: the automatic reheat button can overheat it.
  • Take it out, lift the lid off and eat it from the bowl. It comes out very hot.

Good to know

  • No microwave? Stand the rice bowl, lid on and lid side up, in boiling water for about 15 minutes, and the unopened curry pouch for about 5.
  • In cold weather the rice can come out firm. That is not a fault: give it a little longer.

Where it comes from

  • Marumiya
  • Tokyo
  • Founded 1927

Marumiya began in 1927 with a furikake, the dry seasoning you shake over rice, and has sold meal sets built around packed rice since 1999. It added this butter chicken to its boxed-rice range in 2022 because customers had asked for a curry in it.
