Milk chocolate on a crisp, lightly salted wholemeal biscuit, twelve little pieces in a blue box. It's sweet, but the salt keeps it from tipping into sugary, and the closest thing you'll already know is a chocolate digestive. Buy it if you want Japan's everyday chocolate biscuit; if you want a gift box, this isn't one.

It's properly popular in Japan: in 2025 the big 147 g bag of regular Alfort topped a Japanese sales chart for new and relaunched snacks five months running. That's the range, not this box. The buyers skew older than you'd expect: the biggest group is in their forties. It's an everyday thing there: a desk or handbag snack, and it goes in kids' lunchboxes too.

What you're getting

• Taste: Milk chocolate over a wholemeal biscuit. Pay attention to the biscuit rather than the chocolate: it's lightly salted, and that's the bit Australians don't see coming.
• Texture: The biscuit snaps; the chocolate is soft at room temperature and firm when chilled. Getting that balance right is the whole trick, and there's a name for it in Japan, the golden ratio.
• How much you'll eat: Twelve pieces sounds like several sittings. "I'll just have a couple" is famous last words with these: there's no resealable wrapper, because the box isn't built for one.
• In summer: It will arrive soft. That's normal for this chocolate, and it's not a safety problem, though a piece that melts and sets again won't be as smooth or taste quite as good.
• Allergens: Contains milk, wheat and soy. The factory that makes it also makes products containing egg. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.

If you see 59 g on another Australian listing, that's the old pack. Bourbon dropped it to 55 g in early 2025 and left the barcode unchanged.
