Why we say this

Alfort's 147 g share bag was Japan's best-selling confectionery item for four months running to October 2025, on national POS data. That is the range, not this 12-piece box.

About

Alfort's chocolate slab set on a dark cocoa sablé, a crumbly French-style butter biscuit, twelve pieces to a box. With cocoa in the biscuit as well as chocolate on top, it tastes more chocolatey than the blue-box original Alfort Mini. Buy it if you like a sweet chocolate biscuit; if the dark box has you hoping for bitter chocolate, this one is sweeter than it looks.

アルフォート ミニチョコレート ショコラサブレ, the name on the box, if you're matching it to a pack you saw in Japan.

What you're getting

  • The biscuit: a cocoa and butter sablé with no wholemeal flour in it, where the original Alfort Mini sits on a plain wholemeal biscuit.
  • Texture: crisp and crumbly. It snaps more like a cracker than a cookie, and the chocolate snaps cleanly straight from the fridge.
  • Sweetness: a sweet milk-chocolate biscuit, not a bitter dark one, whatever the box colour suggests.
  • In summer: it can arrive soft, and it keeps best below 28 °C and out of the sun. Pale streaks on the chocolate after it sets again are its fat coming to the surface: it spoils the look, not the taste, and it is not mould.
  • Allergens: contains milk, wheat and soy. Read the pack's own label before you rely on ours.

The pieces are not individually wrapped. In Japan it is a standing part of the Alfort Mini range rather than a seasonal flavour; an older Mini with a plain butter biscuit is no longer in the range, so if you are matching a pack, look for ショコラサブレ on the box.

The maker

Where it comes from

  • Bourbon
  • Niigata

Alfort is made by Bourbon, whose home is Kashiwazaki, in Niigata. The sailing ship stamped into every piece isn't a real one. Bourbon drew it themselves, and named the biscuit after the ship, for the sense of adventure it carries.
